PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Councillor DeRyk advised that the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival was in the City last week ending on Sunday. It was an excellent event with a lot of Citywide activities and he congratulated the volunteers, the board, the organizers and fellow Councillor Goulden who headed up the organization. He also pointed out that at the Gala he shared a table with Cavan Cunningham who is the Mayor of Dog River, was enthused about Yorkton both publicly and privately. He lives year round in Regina so its understandable why he would like Yorkton. He is going to be out of a job in September when the final season wraps up and is considering moving to Yorkton and he wants to continue to be a Mayor and figures that this is as good a community as any where he could be doing that. All those who have ambitions are hereby forewarned.

Councillor Wilson acknowledged the Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for cancer event which was held this past weekend, the 11th annual fundraiser for cancer. Everyone knows of someone, friend or family affected by this illness. Hats off to the organizing committee and the commitment to the community in need. In the last 11 years they have raised about $450,000 excluding this year’s tally, but out of that $420,000 has gone to the Canadian Cancer Society and about $30,000 to local initiatives. This year the commitment will be to the oncology unit at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.

Councillor Pearen advised of visitors in the community who spent time with the Renaissance Committee and toured the street art. They were amazed at the warmness and the hospitality of the people around. Jennifer Dubè from Radio Canada, the French network was very impressed with the art and the plans for the city and how it is going to develop. He gave a pat on the back to all of the citizens who take care of their grounds and City Council for moving in the right direction. During Yorkton’s 125 celebrations the City designated the Dwarf Sunflower and a package of seeds were given to Council. He thanked Yorkton This Week and all those behind the scenes who were involved in this project. A package of seeds will be distributed to all residents.

Councillor Maloney commended the folks at the 17th Annual Ritchie Hall Golf Classic which was held on Friday. $150,000 was raised in this event over the past 16 years for the Red Cross which is their major fundraiser in Yorkton. The Rough Riders brought along 9 players and coaches. He commended Susan Wrubell, Jeff Bahrey and their committee for putting it on and thanked Ritchie Hall for bringing the Riders out. A great day for football, golf and the Red Cross.

Mayor Wyatt congratulated the Parks Department on the ball diamond facilities as the Mosquito AAA and AA baseball tournament was in town hosted by the Yorkton Midgets and he had numerous compliments on our facilities and the quality of the diamonds. Best by far in Saskatchewan.
