PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Councillor Maloney congratulated the Yorkton Film Festival for another successful festival in the City of Yorkton complete with skeet shooting and lobster cooking courtesy of the local Lions Club. It was a popular event with a lot of people from out of town enjoying the combination of skeet and “locally caught” lobster. He would like to congratulate the Co-Chair of the event Janet Hill and their Executive Director Randy Goulden. A Saskatchewan Company winning the Best of Festival Golden Sheaf Award “Silent Bombs All for the Motherland” filmed in Kazakhstan and produced in Saskatchewan was the Best of Festivals. It was the first time in the Festivals’ 63 year history that a Saskatchewan produced film has won Best of Festival. It was a great event and well attended by the residents of Yorkton.

Councillor Pearen advised that the Parkland College is hosting the upcoming “Dollars for Scholars” annual golf tournament held at Deer Park Golf Course on Friday, June 18th. He is challenging everyone to get out there and hit some balls. It’s a Texas scramble with $100 entry fee per team. It will be a fun day of activity and fundraising and most of those dollars raised are matched by the Provincial Government through a Centennial Grant Program. They are trying to raise $20,000. Their total budget for this year is $100,000 for scholarships. Anyone who wishes to donate to the college please note it all goes back to the students attending the college who spend their money in our city. He is looking forward to seeing everybody out.

Councillor Okrainec wanted to make note of another successful event in the City the 13th Annual Brayden Ottenbreit “Close Cuts for Cancer” which took place at the Parkland Mall on May 20th. Congratulations to everyone involved Greg and Leone Ottenbreit are certainly spearheads of the project but not the only people involved. There is a lot of work that goes into it. Overall 65 people took part this year. Over $50,000 has been raised for research and another $5,000 for local initiatives that they do in Yorkton. Since close cuts began about 13 years ago, they have raised close to $600,000 for cancer research. A lot of that money does stay in the community. Congratulations to all of them.

Councillor Fisher pointed out that the Health Foundation’s Charity Golf Classic is coming up on June 10th. This is the 11th Annual Charity Golf Classic and so far this event in its 10 previous years, raised just over $600,000. All of that money stays in our health region and gets re-invested back into our health care facilities and buys equipment. He thanked the businesses for their support and there are 100 businesses that provide prizes or sponsorship. He thanked all the golfers as they have a full field of golfers for the tournament. The golfers will be collecting pledges soon, and if you have a golfer talk to you about sponsoring in the golf tournament, please lend them your support. All that money stays locally.
