Traffic Bylaw No. 18/2016:  Part 8 - Bicycles

Rules of the Road Prevail
66. Every cyclist shall operate a bicycle in accordance with the applicable rules of the road as set out in The Traffic Safety Act.
 
Restrictions
67.

(1)  No person shall operate a bicycle:

  1. on any sidewalk or boulevard, or through a crosswalk, unless just learning to ride a bike.
  2. in a reckless or negligent manner.
  3. carrying a load in excess of that for which the bicycle is designed.
  4. carrying more persons than the bicycle is designed to carry.
  5. without a helmet.
 
Night Riding Restictions
68.

(1)  No person shall operate a bicycle between one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise unless the bicycle is equipped with:

  1. a lighted headlamp or reflector which is visible from the front of the bicycle; and  
  2. a red tail light or reflector which is visible from the rear of the bicycle.
 
Bicycle Parking Restrictions
69

(1)  No person shall:

  1. chain or secure a bicycle to a pole, tree or other structure on any street, sidewalk or City owned property if it interferes with pedestrian traffic unless it has been designated for bicycle parking; or  
  2. leave a bicycle in a reclining position on any street, sidewalk or City owned property.
 
Enforcement
Contraventions of these clauses may result in a $25 ticket, as stated in the Traffic Bylaw.
