In accordance with Municipal Waste Regulations defined by Saskatchewan Environment, this department manages the collection and disposal of solid wastes and recycling programs for the City of Yorkton. These activities are coordinated with a solid waste collection contractor and the landfill operations contractor.

Solid waste collection services are provided on a weekly basis with all waste transported to our Municipal Landfill located approximately two miles northeast of the city on Highway #9 North. Landfill operations include site access and fee collection, developing waste cells, compacting waste and finally covering the waste to protect it from the environment. The landfill is operated six days per week with a seasonal schedule to facilitate operations and for safety reasons.

Many recycling programs have been developed in coordination with Sarcan and other organizations in an effort to reduce the volume of solid waste disposed of in our sanitary landfill.
