Why a Cemetery Walking Tour?
Some will indeed ask this question, since historically cemeteries were
visited at times of burials, for memorial ceremonies, occasionally by mourners,
and most of the time generally avoided.
Now, however, visits are becoming more frequent in the popular quest to seek
out ones ancestral roots. On a walking tour a visitor could encounter an
ancestor, an old friend, and a lot of valuable information.
Furthermore, a tour may provide a unique experience, connecting you with
people, places and events of the distant past.
The first pioneer you will meet is John (Jack) Hole, who displayed the
frontier sense of humour by riding his horse into the Balmoral Hotel. Meet
his wife, Jane, who was an early believer in Women's Lib.
You will be introduced to well-known citizens of Yorkton, Levi and Alice
Beck. He was a prosperous merchant, and she was the chatelaine of
Yorkton's grandest home.
Samuel Foster, remembered in one of our street names had no qualms about
being politically incorrect. Find out why he did his best to eliminate the
Tupper Avenue sign. (Nevertheless -- forever the twain shall meet!)
The tour will take you to a Ukrainian section of the cemetery, where you will
visit the graves of Father A. Delaere and Brother Methodius.
At tour's end, pause and reflect at the soldiers' section.
