City Parks News

The City mosquito control program is still ongoing and there are still mosquitoes out there. There is not a lot of standing water in and around the City of Yorkton and we are currently treating about five sites. Residents are urged to check their backyards and if there are larvae present in the water, dump the water. Remember, mosquitoes can hatch within days.

City back lanes are becoming encroached with hedges and over hanging branches. In most cases, the City of Yorkton does not own any trees in the back lane and residents are responsible for maintaining back lane trees. Access to the back lane must be provided to allow for refuse removal, emergency services and allowing residents access to back lanes without damaging their equipment. In cases where back lanes are not accessible, residents may be issued clean up orders. Check your back lane property and see if there is encroachment on the right of way. There are several companies registered with the City of Yorkton that can help with the maintenance of the trees if you are unable to maintain them yourself. If you have any questions on the issue, please feel free to call the Parks Department.

The Heritage Heights tennis courts have been resurfaced and the courts have been designated for tennis use only. This means that skate boarders and hockey players can no longer use the facility for that purpose. Sports, other than tennis, may seriously degrade the surface. The tennis courts are operated as a co-op with users signing out a key and ensuring that the facility is locked after use. Full refund of the key is awarded after each season. With a 'tennis only' facility, the life of the surfacing could last 2-4 years longer. Call Amber at the Gloria Hayden Center & 786-1777 for access to a key and be a member of the Heritage Heights Tennis Co-op. There are plans to have a hard surface hockey/blade facility by next year at the Park. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated.
