Heritage Walking Tour

The City of Yorkton Municipal Advisory Sub-Commission
invites you to take a self-guided walking tour
of 31 historic dwellings and public buildings of Yorkton in the early 1900's.

One of these architecturally interesting dwellings built in 1911 was the home of pioneers, J.A.M. and Sadie Patrick. Located at 88 Fifth Avenue North, it is now "Patrick Place" -- a popular Bed and Breakfast operated by Gerry and Karen Muir.

The tour booklet is free and can be obtained at Leisure Services (City Hall) and Tourism Yorkton.

Garage Sales Signs

Spring and Summer are the time of year for yard and garage sales. It is illegal to place signs of any type, including those for yard sales, on boulevards, lamp posts, sidewalks or other City property. Your best advertising is still your local newspaper. Garage Sale signs are to be placed on your own private property for location identification.

City of Yorkton Sign Regulations Bylaw #16/2003 states the following:

  • No advertisement shall be permitted which is attached to a fence, pole, tree, or any object in a public street or place.
  • No advertisement shall be permitted which is attached to or standing on the ground in any public street or place.

Signs in violation of this bylaw will be picked up at owner's expense.

Parks News

Armyworms
The Parks Branch is monitoring Armyworm activity. It initially appears that the cold weather in May might have taken a bite out of the Armyworms, as we have not experienced any Armyworm activity to date. If the worms froze, it may mean that the City of Yorkton could be free of Armyworms for several years.

Mosquito Control
Mosquito control is well underway. Given the recent rain, we have expanded our larviciding program and many sites are being treated daily throughout the City. All sites will be marked with a Pest control sign.

Dandelion Control
The Parks Branch is also well underway with Dandelion control. Control areas throughout the City are marked with a pest control sign. Control of these and other weeds will be ongoing throughout the summer.

Boulevard Grass
Residents are reminded that they are responsible for grass cutting on boulevards that front their property. It is recommended that lawns be cut at a minimum of 2 inches, as grass that is cut too short is more susceptible to drought and weed infestation.

If you notice anything requiring attention, or out of the ordinary in the parks and on the trail systems, please let us know by calling 786-1754. As always, your co-operation and patience is appreciated.
