DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND ENGINEERING

Located on the Yellowhead Highway, Yorkton is a progressive community of approximately 17,000 people serving as a hub to the Parkland region. Due to its large trading area, Yorkton has many larger city amenities and provides the quality of life of a smaller community. The City of Yorkton is seeking a key player for its management team, as the Director of Planning and Engineering, to evaluate, co-ordinate and implement a sound plan for the growth, development and renewal of our vibrant community. Reporting directly to the City Manager, Major Responsibilities Include: Responsible for the City's Municipal Planning Services, specifically the ongoing review and application of the Development Plan and Zoning Bylaw including the processes required for land use planning, sub-division approvals, development and zoning control; including overseeing the Building Inspection Division. Responsible for the Engineering Division, overseeing the planning and construction of the City infrastructure in accordance with good engineering practices. Acting as an Advisor to City Council, Administration, the Municipal Planning Commission and the Business Improvement District; Prepare reports, recommendations, policies and project proposals; Conduct research on development issues, carry out urban design projects and follow through on the Downtown Redevelopment Plan serving as a visionary in local and regional planning initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The preferred candidate will have a degree in Urban or Regional Planning or related profession; Five years municipal experience; Possess sound knowledge of the principals and practices of planning and be familiar with Provincial Legislation as well as municipal bylaws; Must possess strong communication/report writing and computer skills.

Journeyman Mechanic

 
APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FOR THE POSITION OF 
JOURNEYMAN MECHANIC 
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Reporting to the Public Works Shop Foreman, this position is responsible for repair and maintenance of all industrial and automotive fleet equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs repair and preventative maintenance of all equipment in the Public Works Department under the supervision of the Shop Foreman. 
  • Assists Shop Foreman in the maintenance of the Public Works yard and buildings.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and comply with all City of Yorkton Standard Operating Procedures, Policies and Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Maintains open line of communication and good working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Complete work orders, time sheets and required reports promptly and accurately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 or GED equivalency.
  • Certified Journeyman Mechanic. Heavy Duty designation preferred.
  • Current First Aid and C.P.R certificates.
  • WHIMIS training. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 driver's license. Class 3 with air endorsement preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain RCMP security clearance.
  • Preference may be given to Employees who reside within the corporate limits of the City of Yorkton.
Salary:
Salary will be paid as a Tradesman in accordance with the current Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 342.

Facilities Labourer I

 
CITY OF YORKTON 
FACILITIES LABOURER I

Reporting to the Parks and Arena Manager, the part-time Facilities Labourer I works from 20 - 40 hours per week and performs various duties related to the general operation of the various Leisure Services operated facilities. The focus of this position will involve, but not be limited to, the general operation and maintenance of the Kinsmen Arena. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performing various preventative and reactive maintenance tasks on various facility operation systems. 
  • Monitoring facility operation systems and reporting situations requiring attention.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment. 
  • Requires the ability to maintain a positive and pleasant attitude while dealing with the users, general public and other staff. 
  • Performing basic caretaking functions. 
  • Maintaining ice at the Kinsmen Arena. 
  • Other duties as signed.
Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to those possessing a Level One Arena Operator's Certificate. 
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be a self-motivated individual. 
  • Be available to work shift work. 
  • Possess the ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Possess the ability to understand and comply with safety policies & procedures. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid class 5 drivers license. 
  • Possess and maintain RCMP security clearance 
  • Possession of a valid recognized first aid certificate is an asset.
  • General handyman experience or experience working in the plumbing and carpentry trades would be an asset. 
  • Experience working in an ice arena environment is an asset.
Salary:
$11.95 - $14.47 per hour.

Lane / Intersection Closure Notice

 
Please be advised of an ongoing scheduled lane closure on Broadway Street West at Laurier Avenue. Eastbound traffic on Broadway will be reduced to one lane in this area and the intersection of Laurier Avenue and Broadway Street will be completely closed to traffic.

SaskTel will have contractors on site at this location performing construction on their facilities.

Please follow the traffic route signs posted and travel with caution in the construction area.

Construction Season!

 
The City of Yorkton is presently laying water pipe for the expansion of our new water treatment facility. The contractor will be working along the grid road located South of Maple Farm Equipment between Highway #10 and 16. Please slow down in this construction area and drive with extreme caution when passing all construction equipment. Have a safe and happy summer.


 

 

 

 

Hydrant Flow Testing

 
Hydrant flow testing will occur on August 24th and 25th between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Residents and businesses could see discolored water in the areas around the Parkland Mall and Wal-Mart.

We have been experiencing a high number of unrepaired ball marks on greens. Golfers are encouraged to repair their ball marks.

City of Yorkton Cemetery Notice

 
The City of Yorkton will be completing a clean-up of the cemetery in accordance with

Bylaw # 1/2004 Section VIII, Subsection 2

'the caretaker will remove any stand, holder, vase or receptacle that is not physically attached to the monument or the base'

Flowers and all other memorials will be placed beside the storage shed at the south end of the cemetery for families to recover.

All flowers or memorials placed at the graveside must be physically attached to the monument, base or foundation.
    

 

 

 

Protective Services Commission

 
The City of Yorkton has made an amendment to Bylaw 10/2000 (the Traffic Bylaw). The amendment to Section 37.(1) will come into force and take effect on September 1, 2006 and is as follows:

No person shall pass a School Bus, that has its safety lights and stop arms in operation, from either direction; and shall stop at least five (5) metres from the front or rear of the school bus, and shall not proceed until the operation of the school bus safety lights and stops arms have been discontinued. This provision shall apply in all areas of the City, outside of designated school zones.

Gallagher Centre Water Park Shutdown

 
Please be advised that the Gallagher Centre Water Park will be closed from August 21st to September 10th due to annual maintenance. We will open again on September 11th. Thank you for your patience.
