Mosquito Control

Prevent West Nile Virus Infection
Practice the 4 D’s

DRAIN standing water from your property - get rid of mosquito breeding areas by draining, removing or drying up any water that remains stagnant for more than a week.  Be sure to check the following areas:  old tires (1), eavestroughs (2), storm drain grates (3), and roof gutters (4), leaky faucets (5), birdbaths and wheelbarrows (7) and wading pools and covers (9).  Also keep ponds (8) and swimming pools (9) circulating and pool covers clean.  Keep compost turned and aerated (10).  Use window screens to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside your house (6).

DUSK & DAWN are time for extra caution - try to avoid being outside at dusk or dawn when mosquitoes are most active.  If you need to be outside, cover up and use insect repellent for extra protection.

DRESS appropriately - wear protective clothing such as loose fitting, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, socks and a hat when outdoors, especially when mosquitoes are most active.  Light coloured clothing is best because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours.  Tightly woven fabrics provide added protection against mosquito bites.

DETER mosquitoes from biting—use insect repellent - if you live or are travelling in an area known to have WNV, use an insect repellent to protect against mosquito bites.  Use only insect repellents that contain DEET or other approved ingredients.  For further information on insect repellents, see Health Canada’s web page:
http://www.pmra-arla.gc.ca/english/consum/insectrepellents-e.html
