Completion of New Fire Station

Yorkton Fire Protective Services has relocated back to 9 Smith Street East after a year and a half hiatus due to the demolition of the old station and the construction of the new fire station.

The old station built circa 1961 was approximately 6900 square feet and was able to house four fire fighting apparatus along with all fire department personnel and offices.

Due to the growth of the City, the former station no longer met the operational needs of the Fire Department.  In addition the 47 year old structure required extensive, costly renovations to continue in service.

The new station designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd. and constructed by Logan Stevens Construction Ltd. is approximately 29,000 square feet.

It includes a hose/training tower, classroom  facility, Emergency Operations Centre for the City, a double five bay drive-thru garage, facilities for the operational branch of the department,  all of the administration offices and an emergency back-up power generator capable of supplying power to the station for three days.

In addition to providing high rescue training for our members the hose/training tower will also be made available to train members from other fire departments. The new compressor also provides increased capacity to fill air tanks for other fire departments.

The new station in addition to housing all of the fire trucks currently in inventory, will allow the department to grow with the City into the future.  This was one of the design criteria for the new station, to meet the needs of today and also to be fully functional forty years from now.

A grand opening for the new station is scheduled for later this spring once the paving and landscaping have been completed.

The total budget for the Fire Hall was $7,915,000 and we anticipate the final cost will be approximately $10,000 under budget. In addition to the structural cost some $100,000 worth of equipment is being purchased utilizing reserves.  Council approved a mortgage in the amount of $7,500,000 for this project and it will be repaid over 15 years.

Fire Chief Dean Clark reported that the department is fully operational and that no loss of service occurred during both moves to and from the stations.  He is quoted as saying that “the management and staff are very fortunate to be working in a state of the art facility such as this” and commends City Council for showing its commitment to the citizens of Yorkton by continuing to make our City the safest and most desirable City in which to live and grow.
