Recovery of Unused Prearranged Burial Lots

In accordance with Section 52 of The Cemeteries Act, 1999, the City of Yorkton may apply to the provincial registrar for a declaration that the interment rights in a lot have been abandoned. The registrar may declare the interment rights to be abandoned if the registrar is satisfied that:

  • The lot has not been used for interment purposes;
  • The City has not heard from the buyer, or the buyers person representative, for 20 years;
  • Reasonable efforts to locate the buyer or the buyers representative have failed.

History

In 1892, a company was formed to establish a cemetery at the end of Agricultural Avenue.  The first cemetery was located east of Borden Street, in the grounds behind Queen Victoria Cottage Hospital, between Agricultural and Assiniboia Avenues. A new cemetery location - the present day site, was decided upon in 1896.  In December of 1901, the Cemetery Company was disbanded and the responsibility was transferred to the Town of Yorkton.

Cemetery Walking Tour

Self-guided walking tour of the City of Yorkton Cemetery gives visitors a chance to experience the unique history of the area. To guide you along the pathways of this beautifully treed 10.5 acres, a book containing 28 sites has been prepared and can be purchased for $3.00. You can purchase the walking tour book at Yorkton City Hall on Third Avenue; at Tourism Yorkton on Highway 9, accross from the Cemetery; and at the Western Development Museum on Highway 16, just west of Gladstone Avenue. The complete tour will take about one hour and a half, but can be shortened. On the tour you will meet many of the early pioneers, and some of the more contemporary figures of Yorkton and area; all interesting and colourful personalities. In the process, much of the region's history will be revealed. A millennium project, this cemetery tour book has been compiled by the City of Yorkton Municipal Heritage Advisory Sub-Commission.
