Parks Department News

City crews are out in the fight against mosquitoes. We are undertaking a larviciding program that controls the larvae of the mosquito. Crews are testing water and if larvae are present in the water, a product called Vectobac is being used. This product is very environmentally friendly and safe to use. The product is selective to mosquito larvae and does not kill other water animals.

It will take some weeks to get the program on a schedule so residents should expect some mosquitoes this summer. One control measure everyone can undertake is to eliminate water sources. If you have bird baths or water feeders, change the water at least once a week. Cleaning your eaves troughs & dumping water out of the holding containers is a sure way to minimize mosquito-breeding areas.

As part of the mosquito control program, the City of Yorkton will be providing a brochure to residents regarding mosquito control, it's links to the West Nile virus and the things residents can undertake to minimize the risk.

If you have any additional questions, please
contact Brian Dudar at the Parks Office at 786-1754.
