Discretionary Use Application

The Council of the City of Yorkton pursuant to Section 74 of The Planning and Development Act, 1983 hereby gives notice of its intention to consider a Discretionary Use Application for:

The Discretionary Use, which is being applied for is to allow for the development of a Family Child Care Home at this location. A Family Child Care Home is the principal place of residence of a family child care provider and shall further mean a provincially licensed place where the care and supervision of not less than three and not more than twelve children, (including the children of the caretaker) who do not reside on the premises, is provided for less than 24 hours per day by a person or persons other than a parent or parents of said children, for compensation.

Any person may make oral or written representation to City Council at its meeting to be held on Monday, December 11th, 2006 in City Hall Council Chambers, Yorkton, Saskatchewan at 5:00 p.m. Oral or written submissions will be considered when the Public Hearing, in respect to this application, is in session.

The City of Yorkton is inviting applications from people interested in serving on the various Commissions of Council for the year 2007.  Appointments will be made early in January to the following:

  • Leisure Services Commission (includes Municipal Heritage Advisory, Arts Sub-Commission, and Deer Park Advisory)
  • Municipal Planning Commission (includes Public Transit and Airport Services)
  • Yorkton Local Library Board and Parkland Regional Library Board
  • Yorkton Housing Corporation
  • Protective Services Commission

Job Opportunity
Applications are invited for the position of

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Arena Labourer will be performing various duties related to the general operation and maintenance of the new multi-purpose Gallagher Centre.
  • Daily operation and maintenance of various types of equipment and all areas of the facility, excluding the Water Park.
  • Maintaining ice at the Arena.
  • Performing set-up and take-down duties for various events and functions.
  • Monitoring facility operating systems and reporting situations requiring attention.
  • Completes other related duties that may be assigned from time to time.
  • Grade 12 or equivalency, with preference for post-secondary education or certification in a related field, experience working in an ice arena environment is an asset.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and public relation skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Possess the ability to understand and comply with safety policies and procedures.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain RCMP security clearance.
  • Possession of a current CPR and First Aid certificate is an asset.
  • Preference may be given to employees who reside within the corporate limits of the City of Yorkton.
Will be paid as an “Arena Labourer I” in accordance with the current Collective Agreement with CUPE Local #342

Blue Box Recycling Service

In early 2006, the City and Prairie Harvest Employment Program initiated a Blue Box Recycling Service for residents in the City of Yorkton.  Each week, Prairie Harvest picks up approximately 1,276 blue boxes containing recyclable items.  These same households have been supplied with a blue bag for separation of paper and cardboard items.  Prior to the Blue Box Program, all items collected would have likely been disposed of in the sanitary landfill.  The City encourages our residents to participate in this program and separate recyclable items from your household refuse.  Not only will it assist in extending the life of our landfill but further reduces waste in our environment by re-using these same materials.   Some of the items being collected are:

  • Glass
  • Tins
  • Paper & cardboard
  • Plastic milk containers
