City of Yorkton Receives Funding For Tree Planting Project
For Immediate Release
October 19, 2026
Yorkton, SK – The City of Yorkton is pleased to announce that it has received funding to support the York Landing & Mayhew Avenue Tree Planting Project. The project was made possible through a $50,000.00 grant funded by the Government of Canada through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Growing Canada’s Community Canopies (GCCC) Initiative, with the City matching the contribution towards the project.
Announced in May 2024, GCCC will support the planting of at least 1.2 million new trees across Canada by the end of March 2031 while offering funding, resources and coaching to communities. The project will enhance Yorkton’s urban forest through the planting of approximately 200 new trees, and is designed to increase tree canopy coverage, improve environmental resilience, enhance community aesthetics, and provide long-term benefits, including shade, improved air quality, and climate adaptation.
“We’re grateful for this investment in Yorkton,” said Mayor Aaron Kienle. “Trees and green spaces are an important part of what makes our community a great place to live, and this funding will help us continue to grow and care for them across the City. The trees we plant today will provide shade, improve our neighbourhoods, and benefit Yorkton residents for generations to come. We appreciate the support of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Government of Canada in helping us make that investment in our community.”
“FCM is proud to support the City of Yorkton’s transformative tree-planting project,” said Tim Tierney, FCM President. “Through the Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative and with the support of the Government of Canada, we’re helping municipalities of every size get the right trees in the ground in the right places, creating cooler streets, cleaner air, and healthier neighbourhoods for decades to come.”
“Whether they are providing shade on a hot summer day, improving local green spaces, or bringing people together outdoors, trees make our communities better places to live,” said Secretary of State (Nature), the Honourable Nathalie Provost. “Together, we are helping communities expand their green spaces, providing lasting environmental and community benefits. The trees being planted will provide greater shade and comfort, and contribute to a healthier, more resilient and sustainable community.”
The project is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, urban beautification, and the enhancement of public spaces throughout the community. Tree planting activities are expected to continue throughout the project timeline, with ongoing monitoring and maintenance to support long-term tree survival and growth.
