Construction and Work Around Trees

Trees on City property are valuable assets and a big part of Yorkton's urban forest that provide many environmental, economic, and social benefits to our community. Keeping City trees safe and healthy is important for enjoying these benefits in the future.

Urban Forestry Bylaw

The City's Urban Forestry Bylaw outlines the protection and care of City trees. The following items are prohibited without prior approval from the City:

  • Cut, remove, or relocate a City tree
  • Use pesticides or harmful chemicals on or near a City tree
  • Block a City tree from getting water, air, or nutrients

Prior approval is not required for the following situations:

  • Placing lights or extension cords on a City tree during the winter months, provided that they do not create hazards or interfere with the tree's health
  • Yardwork, such as mowing, trimming, or hand digging
  • Conducting tree work in back lanes

Fines

Unauthorized work that impacts a City tree may be subject to penalties under the Urban Forestry Bylaw. This includes removal, pruning, or damage.

Working Near City Trees

Work such as construction, demolition, or significant landscaping around City trees may require a permit approval. Contact the City prior to starting any work to confirm the requirements for working near City trees.
