Tree Maintenance and Inspections

The City of Yorkton's Parks Division is responsible for the care and maintenance of City owned trees. This work includes regular inspections, pruning, reforestation and plating programs, and other activities.

Pruning

City owned trees on boulevards and medians are pruned on a rotational basis across the city. Notice is provided to neighbourhoods when this work will be taking place. Neighbourhood pruning occurs on a 4 year cycle.

Trees in parks and green spaces are pruned on an as needed basis.

Pruning is an important part of the tree care process. Young trees are pruned to improve their structure, direct proper growth, and reduce future concerns. Established trees are pruned to remove hazards, provide access and clearance for vehicles and pedestrians, and to maintain good tree health.

Tree Assessments and Inspections

If you are worried about the health of a City owned tree, or think it may pose a hazard, you can submit an online request for assessment and inspection.

The Forestry Stream will inspect the tree and develop a response plan, which may include pruning or in some instances removal.

The City can assist in determining if a tree is City owned or private, and establishing who is responsible for the tree.

The City of Yorkton does not take care of trees in back lanes. Residents should make sure trees and weeds by their property in these lanes are not overgrown. If a tree in a back lane is blocking access, call the Bylaw Enforcement at 306-786-1725 to let them know where the problem is. A Bylaw Division will then contact the property owner and ask them to trim the tree.

If you believe your property has been damaged because of a City tree, such as broken branches or fallen trees, contact the City for information on next steps.

Tree and Stump Removals

Tree removals and stump grinding are two separate operations within the Forestry unit. Tree removals are completed based on priority and hazard status. Tree removals require additional equipment such as bucket trucks and wood chippers to complete, and often requires closure of the road where the tree is located. Advance notice is provide to nearby homeowners, as on-street vehicles will need to be moved to allow work to proceed.

Once the tree has been removed the stump will be ground up and removed. Stump grinding is a seasonal operation, and removals may take up to two seasons to complete.

Re-forestation is the last part of the tree and stump removal process. Homeowners may request a new tree be planted nearby by submitting an online tree planting request.
