Water Meters and Connections

Connections and Disconnections to the City's water supply can be requested for:

Renovation
New construction
Upgrading a shared service (“Y” connection that provides water to two properties) to a single connection.

Permits & Responsibilities

Property Owner is responsible for private-side Water/Sewer installation. This is not managed by the City of Yorkton.
The application for a new water and sewer service is included when obtaining a Building Permit.

Water meters installed in all homes and businesses are the property of the City of Yorkton. As such, we are responsible for the maintenance or replacement of the meter.

Over the next few years, Yorkton will be upgrading its aging water meter system. This will improve efficiencies for the City and allow residents to better manage water usage and identify leaks.

Report a leaking water meter

Call us immediately if you notice a leak coming directly from the meter or from where the pipe joins the meter.

Water valve maintenance

Every property has an isolating shut-off valve before the water meter. Owners must maintain these valves in proper working order.

Exercising the valves on a regular basis is the best way to ensure they do not seize up over time. If this is not done, it may break off when you need it most. We recommend that you exercise the valve at least once a year.

The property owner is responsible for all other leaks and repairs. This includes leaks at the main shut off valve.

All City water meters measure your water use in cubic meters.

As a rule of thumb: One cubic meter equals 1000 litres or approximately 220 imperial gallons (219.969 to be exact).

Water consumption charges will apply on actual consumption used.

All City water meters were upgraded in 2021 and now provide automatic water meter readings to the City, so all billing cycles will be based on actual usage.

Reasons for Higher than Normal Readings
