Recreation Defined

Recreation is the experience that results from freely chosen participation in physical, social, intellectual, creative and spiritual pursuits that enhance personal and community well-being.

The National Framework for Recreation in Canada (2015) brings together work being done across the sport, physical activity recreation, parks, environmental and health sectors to improve the wellbeing of Canadians. The Framework has been endorsed by the Government of Canada, Provincial and Territorial Ministers, the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, Provincial and Territorial Parks and Recreation Associations and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. A summary of the Framework Vision, Values & Priorities can be found here.

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) is the provincial lead for the Framework. Specific Saskatchewan examples can be found in SPRA’s Surveying the Field document.
