Parks Department News

The Parks Department will be conducting pest control in areas of the City of Yorkton over the next couple of months. Gopher control at JC Beach will continue again this year. Other areas being targeted are Highway # 9 and York Road, Yorkton Tourism and in and around the welcome sign at Queen Street and # 10 highway. The product being used is ROZOL. Last year the program had excellent results. Areas under treatment will be placarded.

Hay contracts are being accepted for haying of some of the areas within the City of Yorkton. There are three areas being looked at-Queen street from Highway # 9 to # 10, Gladstone/Queen Street junction behind apartment block and area around the Welcome to Yorkton sign at the Queen Street and Highway # 10 junction. Interested persons can submit a proposal stating parcels and amount of tender. Please contact the Parks division for more information. Proposals will be accepted until April 18, 2003.

The Spring season is upon us and the skateboard parks will be open. Users are reminded that bikes are not allowed at the skateboards parks. There has been a fair amount of vandalism at the parks and if this type of action continues, decisions will be made on the viability of these parks and whether or not they will be kept open. Do your part to help keep these parks open.

Street low-level pruning on boulevard trees is ongoing in the next couple of weeks to months. The area of pruning will include streets from Collacott to Smith Street. Low-level pruning includes the removal of low-lying branches, branches overhanging streets and the removal of water sprouts. Also, American Elm pruning will take place on Maple Avenue up until April 11, 2003. The American Elm pruning ban starts on April 13th and continues until July 31, 2003.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please feel free to call Brian Dudar, Parks Supervisor at the City of Yorkton Parks Department at 786-1754.
