Note:  This is Phase One of a two-phase residential development.  Phase Two will be started as soon as possible after Phase One is completed.

PLANNER

The City of Yorkton has a Full Time Planner position available for a dynamic, highly motivated individual.  Our City is undergoing major growth resulting in many interesting and challenging initiatives related to both current and long term planning. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with vision and the capability to bring our community into the forefront of planning distinction.  This exciting position reports directly to the Director of Planning and Engineering and is responsible for overseeing various municipal planning services concerning the growth, development, and revitalization of the City of Yorkton.  The work requires the employee to exercise judgment, initiative, and creativity.  The nature of the work involves and requires both a significant degree of independence, as well as interdependence and cooperation with various municipal departments in performing professional planning work in one or more fields related to community/land use planning, development control and policy development.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Develop a long range land use plan for the City of Yorkton.
  • Coordinate on-going review and revision of the City of Yorkton Development Plan and Zoning Bylaw.
  • Processing land development applications, agreements and permits pertaining to sub-divisions, re-zoning, discretionary uses, street closures, and site development.
  • Preparation of reports, recommendations, and design concepts to applicable boards or commissions as required.
  • Preparation of various Development and Land Use policies and procedures.
  • Conduct research on development issues carrying out urban design, projects, preparing site plans for future or proposed development and growth.
  • Manage and coordinate all urban planning studies and programs, ensuring compliance with Provincial Legislation.
  • Compile and interpret statistical and other data for urban planning studies and programs.
  • Arrange and participate in discussions with all municipal departments, community groups, developers, community stakeholders, all levels of government and elected officials regarding planning legislation and programs.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Urban Planning or a directly related profession
  • Possession of or qualification for full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners
  • Five years of professional planning experience
  • Experience working in a municipal government setting
  • Thorough knowledge of the Planning and Development Act
  • Extensive knowledge of principles, objectives and strategies and implications of City, Regional and Environmental Planning
  • Thorough knowledge of land development techniques, infrastructure requirements, land appraisal and real estate
  • Thorough knowledge of the National Building Code, and related bylaws and regulations
  • Strong communication and computer skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
  • Ability to be a strong team player and work to coordinate urban planning needs
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License
  • Must possess and maintain RCMP security clearance

Student Technical Assistant – Waterworks

The City of Yorkton invites applications for a
Student Technical Assistant – Waterworks Department

Are you pursuing post-secondary studies in Engineering, Civil, Water, Environmental or Biological Sciences?  The City of Yorkton is very interested in hearing from you as we have a challenging and interesting position for a 4-month Student Technical Assistant in our Waterworks Department.  The Technical Assistant assists and operates in the monitoring, operations, repairs, data testing and collection of the Water Pollution Control Plant, Water Treatment Plants, Water Tower and Wells and Landfill.
 
Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Helps provide an awareness, training and experience in Municipal Environmental Protection, Water Pollution Control and Waterworks operations.
  • Monitors and controls unit process in consultation with operators and initiates change through the use of laboratory test procedures, flow measuring devices, calculations, instrumentation and independent judgment in order to achieve operational and treatment goals.
  • Aids in the daily operation and maintenance of the Waterworks and all associated equipment and machinery.
  • Grass cutting, tree trimming and gardening.
  • Janitorial work, light carpentry duties and painting.
  • Involved in industrial/commercial waste monitoring and laboratory analysis.
  • Involved in Water Testing, Filter Analysis, component performance monitoring and the City’s Piezometer Program.
  • Assist with Bio-Solids application program .
  • Operate under the Wellhead and Aquifer Management and Protection Program.
  • Spread Sheet Creation and Data entry, with working knowledge of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and Word processing.
  • Grounds/Buildings/Facility maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must comply with the OH&S Act and Regulations, and all Safety Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Use every reasonable precaution to avoid workplace incidents.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Secondary School and returning or intending to enter Post-Secondary education.
  • Must live in close proximity of Yorkton during the period of employment.
  • Ability to undertake heavy strenuous physical labour, work with minimal supervision and work collectively with co-workers.
  • Mechanical and Computer knowledge.
  • Water/Wastewater Treatment Experience in analytical laboratory work.
  • Preference will be given to those individuals interested or pursuing Secondary Education in Engineering, Civil, Water, Environmental or Biological Sciences.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License.
  • Possess and maintain RCMP Security Clearance.

Salary will be paid as a “Technical Assistant” in accordance with the current CUPE Local 342 Agreement.

Auxiliary Fire Fighter

The City of Yorkton Fire Department is looking for highly motivated persons, male or female, over the age of 18 to become part of our Auxiliary Fire Fighting force.  Operating as a composite department, Auxiliary Fire Fighters provide support services to the Full-Time Department.  If you are interested in a new challenge and in expanding your life skills, these positions provide for a stimulating team building opportunity. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Under direct supervision, Auxiliary Fire Fighters assist in response, mitigation, and return to service of Fire Department apparatus and the facility.  Response to emergency incidents can include: fires; dangerous goods; rescue work; and other duties as assigned.  Personal and public safety is of paramount importance therefore successful candidates will be required to participate in regular and on going training and will receive protective clothing, a pager, and will be placed on an on-call rotation
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be 18 years of age, in good physical and mental health and must successfully complete a physical fitness test.  RCMP security clearance and a valid driver’s license is also required.  Preference will be given to those possessing current C.P.R., First Aid, and N.F.P.A. or related training / certification.

HOURS OF WORK:
These are paid on call positions with weekly training provided at the Fire Hall.  On-call hours include Monday through Friday 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
