The City of Yorkton and RecyclAbility Enterprises is celebrating Earth Day with a crucial initiative toward household hazardous waste

The theme of Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet”, which essentially boils down to investing in a greener economy. The City of Yorkton, in partnership with the Yorkton Branch of SaskAbilities, is proud and excited to announce the opening of a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site in Yorkton. This opening also commemorates the Earth Day celebrations here in Yorkton.

The Grand Opening of the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot is on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at RecyclAbility Enterprises – 180 Ball Road.

This is one of the many initiatives carried out by SaskAbilities and the City of Yorkton in partnership. We have proudly worked together on curb-side and commercial recycling, transit services, seasonal compost drop off site, and our newest venture the HHW Collection site.

What is hazardous waste?

Any product is considered hazardous when it carries a label saying toxic, corrosive, explosive, flammable or reactive. Many households use products with these warning labels daily, whether you are changing oil in your car, cleaning the house, or spraying weeds in your yard.

These products are safe to use but unsafe when it comes to their disposal methods as they can be a serious threat to soil, water and the air we breathe. Did you know that the average home can accumulate as much as 100 pounds of household waste in storage areas, garages and sheds?

Taking the right step towards responsible disposal of HHW is even easier with the new year-round facility.

Taking the right step

In the past there has been a day dedicated annually, for Yorkton residents to drop off their household hazardous waste products. Over the years, the need for this service has increased, and has led to the opening of Yorkton’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site.

This initiative will enhance our efforts to divert recyclable material from the landfill and provide residents with a convenient drop off location as well as employment opportunities. We aim to increase the awareness and action in our community towards building a greener economy that ensures that future generations continue to have a clean and safe community to live and grow in.
