Parks Department News

Outdoor Rinks
Crews are busy flooding outdoor rinks and if all goes well, rinks should be ready in about a week or so. Skaters are cautioned not to use the rinks prior to authorization, as they may be unsafe (i.e. the ice may not be thick enough). Once rinks are up and running, there is no schedule for usage, so skaters can use the rinks as they become available.

Stay Off Jaycee Beach
Residents are warned to stay off Jaycee Beach. The thickness of the ice is always a concern so it is best to stay off the ice.

Back Lane Pruning
Residents are encouraged to look at their back lanes and ensure that they are accessible to traffic. Yorkton residents are responsible for keeping the back lane directly behind their property, free from overgrowth of shrubs and trees from their property. Trees and shrubs are dormant at this time of the year so this is a good time to prune your trees.

Elm Tree Pruning
City elm tree pruning is underway and the Parks Division will be pruning approximately 244 elm trees. Dutch Elm Disease (DED) has not appeared in Yorkton yet and the Parks Division is working to ensure that the City stays Dutch Elm Disease free. Elm pruning for DED control addresses the deadwood in trees, broken/crossing branches and crown raising. The elm bark beetle typically enters the tree through recent pruning cuts or through deadwood. Proper pruning will allow the cut to heal, but there is very little healing with deadwood, therefore the deadwood should be removed and disposed of properly.

The Parks Department has an 8-year elm tree pruning cycle, however homeowners are on their own to prune their trees. Therefore all homeowners are encouraged to prune their elm trees to help ensure the City stays free from Dutch Elm Disease. Call the Parks Department at 786-1754 if you require any additional information on Dutch Elm Disease.
